Nine design concepts by Taiwanese students have been recognized in Germany’s 2010 red dot award, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology announced Sept. 14.

Innate Vase, created by NTUST College of Design students Lai Chung-ping and Yeh Ming-hong, was named “best of the best.” It turns PET bottles into attractive flower vases with screw-on funnel-shaped tops, making it easy to add water.

Two other designs by the creative duo of Lai and Yeh also received awards: Relief Light, a table lamp that doubles as emergency lighting, and Block Mold, inexpensive toy blocks made with recycled pulp. Chen Po-ho contributed to the latter project.

Other red dot winners from NTUST students include Light Emitting Door, Rain Brush, Camera Puzzle, Easy Way, Anature Light and Toy Guardian.

The designers are expected to receive their honors in November in Singapore, and will see their concepts on display for a year at the red dot design museum there, NTUST said.

The red dot award is divided into 11 categories in design concept, product design and communication design. More than 3,000 works from 55 countries competed in the design concept category this year, with awards going to 180. The “best of the best” honor went to just 29 designs, the university added.

The red dot design award was founded in 1955. Together with the International Forum Design and International Design Excellence awards, it is one of the three most influential design prizes in the world. (THN)
